How it started!
Our Journey
Bwana Tembo was not just a business thought there is a bigger vision
Our Roots and a Love for Nature
The story of Bwana Tembo began with the Dal Lago family's deep connection to Africa, a bond that spans generations. Tito followed in the footsteps of his father, who was one of the first doctors with CUAMM Doctors with Africa—an Italian NGO that has promoted and protected health in Africa since the 1950s. In 1986, Tito and Nicoletta moved to Uganda with their young son, Francesco and Davide was born there later. Embracing Uganda as their home, the family developed a lasting love for the country’s wildlife, natural landscapes, and the importance of conservation.

Building with Purpose
Construction of the lodge began in 2010, using local materials and labor to minimise its environmental impact and support the wider community and economy. Grass-thatched roofs, handcrafted carpentry, and natural foundations were chosen to blend seamlessly with the surroundings. The aim was clear: keep the lodge as natural as possible, maintaining more trees on the property than anywhere else in the area. The bush-themed lodge offers a raw, authentic experience.
A Story of Nature, Heritage, and Comfort
Set against the stunning landscapes just outside Murchison Falls National Park, Bwana Tembo (Mr Elephant in Swahili) is more than just a place to stay—it is a reflection of our family's deep love for wildlife, nature, and authentic African experiences. Since opening in February 2012, the lodge has welcomed guests from around the world, offering adventure, comfort, and a strong commitment to preserving the environment.

Italian Home Cooking
The culinary experience at Bwana Tembo is truly a highlight of the stay. The lodge prides itself on its talented chefs, who specialize in Italian cuisine, bringing a touch of home to every meal. Guests can indulge in a variety of comforting dishes that are not only delicious but also made with the freshest ingredients. The kitchen is well-equipped to accommodate various dietary preferences, including vegetarian and vegan options, ensuring that every visitor can savor a delightful and satisfying dining experience that caters to their individual tastes.

Wildlife & Adventure
Is a constant companion at Bwana Tembo. Elephants, bushbucks, kobs, and rare lizard species share the grounds with vibrant birdlife, including owls and eagles. Guests can enjoy the peaceful surroundings, taking in stunning sunrises and sunsets, and embracing the natural rhythms of the bush. Since 2022, the lodge has offered guests the unique opportunity to experience bush camping inside Murchison Falls National Park. This adventure allows guests to immerse themselves in the magic of the park, enjoying close encounters with wildlife, savoring Italian-inspired BBQs under the stars, and experiencing the comfort of real beds within a natural camping setting.

Evolving with Time
The lodge continues to improve while staying true to its natural charm. Additions like a pool (built in 2022, renovated in 2024) and the connection to electricity in 2024 bring modern comforts without compromising its rustic appeal.
Whether you're seeking a peaceful retreat, a nature-focused visit, or a bush adventure, Bwana Tembo provides a genuine, down-to-earth experience. The lodge’s story is one of passion, heritage, and a commitment to preserving Uganda’s wild beauty—inviting you to be part of it.
