About

Bwana Tembo Safari Camp

In 1986, our family embarked on a life-changing journey that led us to this incredible country. Over the years, we’ve witnessed its transformation, and it’s our passion for this land that drives us.

Bwana Tembo, strategically positioned next to Murchison Falls National Park and just a kilometer from the banks of the awe-inspiring River Nile, embodies our deep-rooted connection to this captivating environment.

Here, the magnificent African elephant remains a common sight, and nature’s rhythm takes center stage, captivating us day in and day out.

We look forward to welcoming you to Bwana Tembo and embarking on new adventures together amidst the untamed beauty of Murchison Falls National Park’s mesmerizing surroundings.

Bwana Tembo is located on the outskirts of the little town of Pakwach in the far north west of Uganda, 397 kilometers from the capital city of Kampala. This distance will take you approximately 6 hours to drive from Kampala, or you could take a scheduled 40 minute flight to Pakuba airstrip, this is around a 50 minute drive away from the camp. If you do decide to drive yourselves and go through Masindi those with an adventurous spirit may choose to sail down the Nile using the ferry between Masindi and Pakwach.

An alternative flight plan would be into Arua which is around 2 and a half hours away from Pakwach, but offers the opportunity to do some sightseeing on the drive as game is regularly found on the road outside the national park.

As you cruise on the smooth asphalt surface, watch out for the baboons that like to sit or play in the middle of the road. Sometimes they bask lazily in the glimmering sun, as other animals saunter majestically cross the road, owning every inch of the vastness. In this part of the world, the animals have the right of way.

Those self driving through the national park to reach Bwana Tembo should note that there is a per person park fee and vehicle park fee which will be charged at the park gates.

The camp, sprawled at just a kilometer from the white Nile, is comprised of both cottages and safari tents to suit the needs of a diverse clientele.

All accommodation types are self contained with flushing toilets, hand basins and showers with hot and cold running water. Lights are set up inside and outside of the accommodations and each cottage or tent has its own veranda.

Bwana Tembo is entirely Eco-friendly, with solar power systems ensuring that all accommodations have light throughout the day and night.
“Bwana Tembo” derives its name from the Swahili “Sir Elephant” or “Master Elephant”.

This name was chosen during construction when various groups of elephants visited the site, thus the camp is named after it’s wandering four legged gentle giants.
